Teach Your Kids to Stay Calm and Call 999 in an Emergency

Tips for Staying Calm and Calling for Help:

1. Practice Makes Perfect:
• Role-Playing: Regularly practice emergency scenarios with your child through role-playing. Pretend to be the operator and guide them through what to say.
• Repetition: Repeat the practice often to make it a second nature for your child.
2. Memorise Key Information:
• Address and Phone Number: Ensure your child knows their home address and phone number by heart.
• Emergency Contacts: Teach them how to access and use emergency contact numbers stored in your phone.
3. Clear and Simple Instructions:
• What to Say: Instruct your child to clearly state their name, location, and the nature of the emergency.
• Stay on the Line: Teach them the importance of staying on the line until the operator tells them it’s okay to hang up.
4. Stay Calm Techniques:
• Deep Breathing: Teach your child simple breathing techniques to help them stay calm (e.g., deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth).
• Positive Reinforcement: Remind them that staying calm helps them think more clearly and communicate better.
5. Understand the Situation:
• Assess the Scene: Teach your child to quickly assess if it’s safe to stay where they are and how to describe the situation to the operator.
• Basic First Aid: Equip them with basic first aid knowledge to manage the situation while waiting for help.
